We belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints otherwise known as “The Mormons”. We are proud of this part of who we are! I am excited to team up, 65+ of us strong… to extend an invitation to see a film. A film entitled “Meet The Mormons”.
This film is not meant to be an “in your face” – you must join our church film. It is simply designed and produced to uplift and inspire you through six stories of those of our faith who have followed promptings to follow Christ more fully in their lives.
We hope you take the opportunity to enjoy this film. We hope your hearts are made light as you feel the goodness that comes from following our Christ and Savior. All proceeds from the film will be donated to The American Red Cross. So not only will you be uplifted and inspired, your money will be going to an amazing charity!!
What’s SPECIAL about this to me, is that my grandpa is one of the featured 6 in it! His name is Gail Halvorsen, known as The Candybomber.
I want to tell you a little about how my grandpa has inspired me, and how the church has shaped who I am.
The Candybomber’s story (simplified)
My grandpa was an airline pilot for the Berlin Airlift during WWII. One day he drove out to ‘tour’ the city. He came across a fence, and there was a small group of West Berlin children looking at him. He chatted with them and was impressed with their gratitude.
Most kids on the East side of Berlin would run up to the pilots and beg for candy. These kids didn’t. All they said was how grateful they were for their freedom, and for the work he was doing as a pilot, to bring them food.
Simply said, they were grateful for the HOPE it brought them. Without hope, it was all useless.
As my grandpa was walking away, he felt prompted to give them the 2 sticks of gum in his pocket. He pushed it away, thinking the kids would fight over it, since there were only 2 pieces, and about 30 kids. Again he felt prompted to turn around and give it to them. So, he turned around.
What he saw astonished him further. The kids broke the sticks of gum into small pieces, to share. Those who didn’t get the gum, would tear a piece of the wrapper off and pass it around, just to smell!
My grandpa quickly formed a plan. He told them to come the next day to this field, and he would drop candy out of an airplane on parachutes. They asked,
“How will we know which airplane is yours?? There are so many!”
“I’ll wiggle my wings!” He replied.
And that’s why he’s known as Uncle Wiggly Wings. The next day he dropped candy tied to handkerchiefs out of his airplane. And the rest is history.
They continued dropping candy, giving hope to the people of West Berlin. By the end of the airlift, he and other crews had dropped 23 tons of chocolate over Berlin. Here’s an interview by Tom Brokaw, showing my grandpa and his pictures from the war.
What I love about my grandpa:
- His example of service
His famous quote is, “Service before self!” And that’s how he lives and has always lived. He inspires me to reach outside of myself and help others, especially in family matters.
- Our shared love for horses
That’s always been ‘our thing.’ Whenever he is around, we talk horses. I live on his farm and take care of his 2 horses. One summer I worked on a ranch and brought his Arabian horse with me. He would get so excited whenever I told him about the latest grand adventure I had. And I was always excited to tell him. I love having a shared interest with him.
- The way he treats children
My grandpa has this funny clicking happy noise he makes when he plays with kids, and it always makes them laugh. I try to copy him but it never seems to have the same effect. I just love watching him play with kids. He loves them, and they all love him!
- His incredible health
My grandpa RAN down a bunch of stairs, when he was 93 years old. He was in a show that was featuring his story, and I couldn’t believe he was running on stage!
He just passed his drivers license test with perfect eye sight. No glasses!! He walks a few miles every morning with his wife.
He’s incredible!! He is such a good example of health to me. Whenever we eat together I can tell he is mindful about what he eats, and how much. He still fits in his pilot suite from his 20’s!!
- Pretty much everything about him
I just love my grandpa. He is always on your side. Family is top priority. He is always chipper, happy, and thoughtful. What an amazing man!
I just want to add my testimony to all the other bloggers who are sharing their faith today.
I know Heavenly Father lives! He loves us, perfectly. I know the Savior loves us, and died for us. I know that families can be together, forever.
This gospel has made me into the person I am today. I attribute my happiness, and care-free attitude to the principles I have learned at church. I know everything will be alright, and that all that really matters is that we make it back to live with Heavenly Father again. I am not a worrier because I have faith and hope in the Savior. I find peace in spirituality–in having a REAL relationship with Heavenly Father. I LOVE that!
When I read his words in The Book of Mormon and the bible, I calm down, and often find answers to my questions. I know God hears and answers prayers. That is the BIGGEST comfort I have–knowing I can communicate to God through heart felt prayers. It’s amazing.
The Book of Mormon is the true word of God. I would love to share a free copy with you if you are interested in reading it! Just send me an email
